A Brief History of Chesapeake, VA

Chesapeake was created when the former independent city of South Norfolk consolidated with Norfolk County. The consolidation was then approved and the new name selected by the voters from each of the communities by referendum. The new city joined the ranks of the current Seven Cities of Hampton Roads in 1963.

The name Chesapeake originated from the Chesapeake Indian Tribe that had apparently been annihilated in the years just before the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia by English colonists.
