The suburban lifestyle with its backyards, picket fences, and tree-lined streets
has been the most popular lifestyle among professionals with families since
the 1950s. People fall all over each other to snap up the latest homes in the
newest suburbs with the most advanced tankless water heaters. But why do they
do this? What's so attractive about this way of life that has allowed
it to endure for over fifty years? And more importantly, is this the kind of
lifestyle you want when you move to Chesapeake? This article should help you
make that decision by outlining some of the major reasons people keep choosing
suburban homes.
Noise Reduction
Chesapeake is a major industrial city, which is great for the city's
economy but bad for you if you're trying to sleep at night. The dulcet
tones of an automatic strapping machine lullaby could have you checking into
a mental institution just to get some rest if you choose a condo or apartment
in a neighborhood too close to the industrial sector. Downtown can also be too
rowdy for many people's tastes, as the sounds of the night life: drunken
people shouting, cars honking, loud dance music, often pervade the more popular
districts. Suburbs are specifically zoned to exclude commercial activity, so
your noise woes will be limited to your neighbor's lawn mower.
Community Spirit
Block parties and community events in urban neighborhoods near downtown may
be a Canadian trade mark, especially in Toronto, but you won't find
a similar attitude here in Chesapeake. There are simply too many people in the
urban areas and even if the numbers were manageable, they'd still be too
busy to care about their neighbors. The only places in Chesapeake where you
can get to know your neighbors, invite them to barbecues, and seal off the street
for the occasional block party are the suburbs.
Space to Raise Kids
While many people in urban settings manage to raise their children quite well
in an apartment, changing cloth diapers on the windowsills and schooling their
kids in what to say if they're mugged, it's not an ideal situation.
Kids love to run around and make noise. If you're jammed into an apartment
building you'll get complaints from neighbors, and you just couldn't
let them go running around in the busy streets. A Deep Creek or Great Bridge
suburb would give them yard space, neighborhood kids to play with, and even
their own bedroom.
Less to Worry About
The number one reason people, especially people with children, choose suburbs
is because of the lower crime rates. In suburban neighborhoods everyone knows
everyone and will notice out of place people or cars, so crimes are harder to
commit. You can trust your neighbors to watch your kids or your house if needed,
and you don't have to panic every time the kids stray out of your field
of vision. The exclusion of commerce means no sketchy pawn shops offering junkies
cash for jewelry and the higher property values squeeze out those people of
lower economic status who are more likely to turn to crime.
